A State of Local Emergency was declared for Christchurch City and Selwyn District at 6:13pm on 14 February 2024 due to the impacts of a large fire in the Port Hills. The state of emergency was terminated at 1pm on 21 February 2024 when notice of a local transition period was given.

A state of local emergency was declared for Canterbury on 30 May 2021 due to widespread flooding after heavy rain. The declaration was lifted on 3 June 2021. States of local emergency remained in place for Waimakariri, Selwyn and Ashburton districts from 3 June to 10 June 2021.

Media release 14 February 2016 Christchurch Earthquake The National Crisis Management Centre has been stood down following its earlier activation to monitor today’s earthquake in Christchurch. Sarah Stuart-Black, Director, Ministry of Civil Defence & Emergency Management (MCDEM) says the response to this earthquake has been managed locally by Christchurch City Council. The National Crisis Management Centre was activated to monitor the situation and coordinate support across Government if it was required.

A magnitude 6.3 earthquake occurred at 1251 hours on Tuesday 22 February 2011 approximately 10 km south- east of Christchurch causing significant damage to a number of buildings and major disruption to the Canterbury region. 181 confirmed fatalities were recorded as a direct result of the earthquake. A state of national emergency was declared.

A magnitude 7.1 earthquake occurred at 04:35 hours on Saturday 4th September 2010 approximately 30 km west of Christchurch causing damage to a number of buildings and major disruption to the Canterbury region. No fatalities were recorded as a direct result of the earthquake.
