Te Rūnanga o Kaikōura (Kaikōura Rūnanga) represent mana whenua of Ngāti Kurī as one of 18 Papatipu Rūnanga in the tribal network of Ngāi Tahu.

The jurisdiction of Kaikōura Rūnanga extends to the northern boundary of the Ngāi Tahu takiwā and in the Hurunui district extends to an area of shared interest with Te Ngāi Tūāhuriri, another of the 18 Papatipu Rūnanga of Ngāi Tahu.
As the tribal structure is driven by flax roots aspirations, the objectives of Kaikōura Rūnanga are a foundation for Ngāi Tahu response.
The Order in Council (Hurunui/Kaikōura Earthquakes Recovery (Coastal Route and Other Matters) Order 2016) provided Te Rūnanga o Kaikōura collective responsibility for nominating an Iwi Advisor (Mahaanui Kurataiao) and organising associated cultural monitors to work with the Iwi Advisor in Te Rūnanga o Kaikōura takiwā.
